Bill Henson (b. 1955)

Untitled Sequence #6, 1977

silver gelatin photograph, edition: 3/15

What has he seen?
This portrait is from one of Bill Henson’s earliest exhibitions. Having lived with it for a long time, I’m trying to recall what first engaged my interest? Probably the hollow hooded eyes and sensual lips, or the unsettling almost deathly beauty. The play of light and shadow on tender flesh that evokes something ancient yet eternal.
