Andrew Purvis (b. 1963)

Abyss, 2001

oil and wax on cotton duck, signed, titled and dated verso ‘Andrew Purvis, Abyss, 2001’

Cool jazz.
Ambiguous and engaging, ABYSS is one of few purely abstract paintings in the collection. Despite the sombre title, it’s full of colour, rhythm and jazzy invention. I can’t resist works that invite personal narratives and, knowing of Andrew’s interest in post-war European abstraction, I imagined ABYSS as a 1950’s Paris nightclub, with Miles Davis and Juliette Greco on the dance floor, swinging to Kind of Blue.
