Andrew Purvis (b. 1963)

A Mountain, 2001

oil and wax on canvas, signed and titled verso ‘Andrew, A Mountain’

Mystical yearnings.
Through mutual friends, I’d often encounter Andrew Purvis in unusual places. Andy was always up for adventure, be it exploring tribal artefacts in remote islands of Indonesia, or in Paris, descending the catacombs, along labyrinthine tunnels past skeletons of long dead communards. This quasi-mystical painting has elements of all this embedded in its tactile waxy surface, full of hidden meanings.
