The Lwalwa people is a small ethnic group from Belgian Congo. This mask exhibits a typical cubistic design for which the Lwalwa are renowned. As William Rubin has remarked, ‘Lwalwa masks bear an affinity with the dramatic profiles and sculptural solidity of Pablo Picasso’s busts of the 1930s'
