Byzantine Gaze.
I encountered Bill Henson’s memorable colour series in a church in Melbourne, as part of Leo Schofield’s 1996 Melbourne Festival. Curated on high sandstone walls, the images glowed like religious icons in a Byzantine cathedral. None more so than this haunted face, gazing out like a character from a novel by Dostoevsky.
