Due to the lack of a standing army, military groups called Asafo emerged during the 18th century on the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana). The Asafo adopted European military practices under colonisation and started using the Union Jack on some flags until the independence of Ghana in 1957. Each Asafo company has its own flag and often illustrates a proverb
